Magnolia Jazz Band in Palo Alto 2008

Magnolia Jazz Band in Palo Alto 2008

In less than a week, we’ll be jazzing up our regular New Year’s Eve party. Meanwhile, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were family time for me, and today (December 26) I’m gradually sneaking back to work on marketing the band.  Mainly by devoting a few hours to searching the internet for the latest words on using social media.

I gather opinions, tips, and advice from MANY people worldwide.  Representing widely different backgrounds, they approach using social media from a refreshing array of perspectives.  Some of my favorite reading today (just a few of many I follow regularly) comes from Ann Evanston, Jeff Bullas, Mari Smith, Michelle ShaefferAmy Porterfield, Seth Godin, and Guy Kawasaki.

What with Christmas and everything, it’s reassuring to find no staggering news today.  I survey the scene and note that the few best marketing strategies stay unchanged, as do some of the most popular tactics for using social media.  At the same time, it’s exciting to see a few new promising tactics emerge every week.

I try my best to market the band by seizing the best information I can find.  The crux of online marketing seems to be first, create and optimize your website.  Second, attract visitors to your website, using your blog and using social media — all you can handle.

For more specific details, check those people I just mentioned, read what they have to say and see some of the people they recommend.

Now don’t misunderstand, I’m not a marketing guru or an expert on using social media.  I’m just a musician, trying to use these new tools, and I’m always wondering.

How do you like the marketing messages you receive?  Got a favorite?  How are you using social media for your own business?
