Magnolia Jazz Band in Burlingame 2011

Magnolia Jazz Band in Burlingame 2011

I am feeling happy this morning.  Last night we entertained a group of seniors and their guests at a terrific party.  Here’s a photo just as guests began arriving.  An “over-the-shoulder” shot with my iPhone.  (I’m always happy trying a new angle.)

Calling it their “Winter Formal”, about 80 people all ages, ranging from maybe 9 to 90, enjoyed several happy hours of delicious appetizers, champagne, soft drinks, and conversations.

And dancing. The dance floor stayed full, and the band played danceable standards from beginning to end.  Songs like “Stardust”, “Besame Mucho”, “Beyond the Sea”, “Tea for Two”, “Tennessee Waltz”, and a few more like “Don’t be Cruel”, “Michelle”, and “Love Me Tender’.  Familiar tunes that everyone would recognize.

The room was beautiful.  Everyone was feeling happy, enjoying the party, singing along and requesting their favorite songs.  And taking photos. Whatever did we do at parties before digital cameras?

This was our last holiday celebration before New Year’s Eve, and I’m feeling happy thinking about it. Of course, the band played well and the music suited the occasion perfectly.  But what pleases me most is realizing how much we made the evening special.

At the risk of sounding hopelessly sappy, I feel so fortunate to help people get happy and have a good time celebrating.  We entertain at parties like this all the time.  Different parties — weddings, birthdays, anniversaries — and different guests, call for different programs.  But each time reminds me how much I’m feeling happy making a living this way.  The secret?  Do what you love and do it well.

New Year’s Resolution:  Continue doing what I love, and encourage friends to do likewise.  What leaves YOU feeling happy?
