Social media networks influence marketing more and more every day, and I’m scrambling aboard.
Some background. Three things: First, no matter what product or service people offer, if they’re in business, they have to keep their fans and potential clients interested. That’s the job of marketing.
Second, it’s been said that EVERYONE is a salesman. All of us always try to influence people – parents, children, friends, shoppers, voters… the list goes on.
Third, in the same sense, marketing is a businessman’s (or businesswoman’s, obviously) effort to influence his community. To encourage everyone to think of his business, especially when it’s time to shop or to give a recommendation to a friend.
Here’s where I’m going with this. No matter what you do, I’m like many of you. To stay in business, I’m a salesman and I market. I make a living managing my band and playing to entertain people.
For example, here we are creating a wonderful atmosphere at a birthday party last December. Thanks to Matt Taylor, of Bluebird Videos, for the beautiful video (click to watch it and hear us playing).
Long before the social media networks burst upon the online scene, I was marketing the Magnolia Jazz Band every way I could. This included making public appearances, sending mailings, printing brochures, maintaining our website, making cold calls, playing in trade shows, networking, touring, advertising, and following up with our regular clients. Whew!
Those opportunities to talk with people were my social media networks.
Many of those long-standing strategies remain in my marketing arsenal today, and in recent years I’ve added online social media networks.
I find marketing online with social media networks exciting because they’re so new and constantly growing. Every month I find new clever ways to convey the old tried-and-true messages, and brand-new channels to convey brand-new information.
So please understand, I’m no marketing guru or social media pro. Certainly not an expert, but definitely a fan. I’m just a musician, entertaining people and helping them enjoy their celebrations. To stay in business, I’m always perfecting how to market my band.
These days you will find me active on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn, and all the rest. And right now I’m blogging. This world of online social media networks is my new marketing sandbox, and I’m having a ball playing.
How about you? Do you manage a business? Are you using social media networks for marketing? How is it working?
