It’s clear to me now, but it wasn’t at first.

When you’re a wedding guest, what you’ll see at the wedding depends on what you think about their wedding inspiration.  What’s happening here, who gives what, and who gets what.

And I’m not talking about just a wedding, of course.  This is about whatever YOU work on, too.  But more about that in a moment.

Early on I came to realize that several versions of “reality” operate at weddings.  And whichever you see at any time depends on your sense of the wedding inspiration.  You’ll see things in terms of what you expect.

Some people say it’s all about the bride.  That it’s her day, and she gets whatever she wants.  I keep this clearly in mind as I help her plan the music for her celebration.

Yet her parents can see the weddings as a momentous landmark in the sweep of their child’s growth.

Yet her friends can see the weddings as as the culmination of one romantic adventure and the beginning of another.

Yet all the professionals creating the ceremony and the reception can see the wedding as their opportunity to serve and perform their very best, to help everyone enjoy the moment and create memories to last a lifetime.

These are just four inspirations, and of course many more are always operating.  All of them are true, and a hundred participants will bring a hundred perspectives, and see a hundred unique slices of “reality”.

To appreciate the wedding, we’re wise to recognize all of these inspirations.  As many as we can.  Be flexible, acknowledge them, and address them.

For me, weddings are celebrations.  I provide upbeat, romantic music to help everyone celebrate according to whatever they see.

For example, here we are between tunes, entertaining during cocktails in a recent gorgeous wedding reception at Villa Montalvo.  With my iPhone, it’s my view from the back of the band.

I imagine that each of us, in any line of work, can describe similar examples from our own experience.  What’s happening here, who gives what, and who gets what.

YOUR turn.   What inspires your own work?  Is it like a wedding inspiration?

Nice slicing and dicing of an event to demonstrate the old saw about the blind men and the elephant…

I love this! When we attend the wedding we are witnessing a miracle of two people become one flesh as designed by God. It is a privilege to be witnesses. The wedding is not the main event, but a precursor to the real event – their life together afterward. This is why we do what we do–blog about growing healthy marriages, so the love continues in the years ahead. Excellent post. Thanks!
Wish we lived nearby–we love live jazz.

a beautiful way to show that everyone is looking for inspiration in a wedding. it helps some reconnect to their own wedding, seeing future of their children, reconnecting to the love they feel, and much more. and your band has a great part to play in the inspiration.

What a great perspective! It’s kind of like a movie I saw once about the assination a president (I can’t remember the name). When you look at the whole picture a situation starts to make sense. Thank you for this tidbit. I need to use it more. I’m inspired by life and my clients to enhance my own life.

Sometimes I think one of the consequences of my work is that different aspects of self in myself and in my students, marry. I think there is such a power in this kind of shifting of viewpoints or perspectives you are talking about here, Robbie
