Apple’s iPhone apps grab our attention. And hold it, at least for a while. The fun always begins with watching some astonishing technology. Then unless we find some compelling use for them, we move on and these apps fade away.
Compelling use? Here’s a typical story. I recently met with a bride who requested the theme music from the PBS show “Masterpiece Theatre” for her wedding Processional. Well, I know the tune — “Rondeau”, by Jean-Joseph Mouret (1682-1738) — and just to confirm it’s what she wanted, I searched my YouTube iPhone app for “Masterpiece Theatre theme music” and 10 seconds later played this video — one of dozens that came up. Bingo!
I help people plan their wedding or party music nearly every day, and often use a few iPhone apps in the process. Despite their popularity, app games like Tetris or Angry Birds are intriguing for a minute, but I quickly dismiss them as useless time-wasters. Yea, go ahead, I’m no fun at all.
The iPhone apps I like — REALLY like — are tools that make me productive. I carry about 100 iPhone apps right now, and I use maybe a dozen throughout the day, every day. To handle jobs I’ve always done, but now with far greater efficiency. Or to handle tasks I used to only dream about. Or ones that I never even imagined!
I just learned that we can find over 500,000 iPhone apps in the iTunes App Store, and that the current iPhone can hold over 2,000 of them and the current iPad over 4,000.
So we have plenty of room to grow, but how many iPhone apps can we ever use?
Personally, I use just a few for helping people plan their wedding or party music. Today, I’m telling you about one of my very favorite iPhone apps — “YouTube”. In coming weeks I’ll describe several more I’m just as enthusiastic about.
How about YOU? Are you using iPhone apps on your smartphone?

I don’t use any iphone apps! I use Android apps and yes, I have my favorites like Evernote, the calendar, WorldCardMobile to record business cards and others. I have recently added some drawing apps but haven’t had a chance to use them yet.

Thanks, Julieanne,
I’m finding that most Android apps have their counterparts for the iPhone. Either way, using these apps is a great time and energy saver. Evernote is one of my favorites. What drawing apps do you like, and can you really draw on a smartphone screen?

I love my iPhone. I am so glad you found a way to use it in your profession. I used it yesterday to receive a discount.

I have a droid and I use an app for online banking and that’s about it right now. Haven’t really had time to explore what is possible with these new-fangled things!
Oh, Maureena, you are in for a delightful surprise! Whenever you begin exploring, please let me know what you find and what you like.
