Marketing with video is very popular throughout the entertainment industry, and I’m getting involved.  I’m already marketing with video on a rudimentary level, and there’s always great room for improvement.

My plan: I aim to record little videos discussing my thoughts about entertaining at weddings and parties, helping people plan music for their celebrations, and managing my band.  Upbeat, interesting  information my friends, colleagues, and clients would like to know.  Just look around — there are dozens of ways a video can help a musician’s marketing campaign.

Robbie Schlosser in his first videoI first recorded a video of myself last March, and I was totally unprepared for how awkward I felt.  And looked.  Here’s a snapshot from my very first time.  Surprised because I had NO problem talking with people one-on-one, or at networking meetings, or announcing at concerts or wedding receptions.

Public speaking held no terror for me, as long as I spoke with people.  Been doing that all my life.  But speaking to a camera felt like speaking to a tree or a pair of socks.  Without someone responding to my words, I felt so foolish speaking that I could hardly go on.  Same with you, too?

But I want to get past this awkwardness, so I’ve challenged myself to record a 1-minute video every day in the month of September.  Reason: Disciplined practice should make recording easy and effortless.  I aim to practice speaking naturally, smoothly, expressively, and without awkward hesitations.  To learn to speak with ease and make one point, directly and quickly.

Yes, I saw “The King’s Speech”.  It’s like that, only much less intense.

Today is day #3 of my challenge, and let me show you the video I recorded yesterday.

By October 1st, I expect to have added at least 30 new videos to my YouTube channel.  Visit my channel and watch my progress.  Compared with my first video, you’ll see I’ve already come a long way, and I expect to notice a little more improvement day by day.

In the meantime, I’m tempted to create a post on my blog and embed some (or all) of this month’s 30 videos.  Hopefully this post could inspire, or at least encourage, people who struggle with creating their own video.  It might be an interesting on-going series, too, like the blog/diary of that amateur chef in the Julia Child movie I saw recently.  Or it could be a weekly post, featuring my seven most recent 1-minute videos.  I could document my weekly progress and comment on it.

Great!  I like that second idea — it gives me four blog posts for this month’s blogging schedule.  I could call it “My Weekly Video Progress”.  Sound like a good idea?

Bottom line:  Marketing with video holds great promise for my band, and for your business, too. Today the field is in its infancy.  If you struggle to get involved making a video, consider giving yourself a 30-day challenge.  Discipline yourself to record one video every day.  Can you suggest another way to practice?
