Recently I started describing a daydream about my present and future, and here’s the rest of it:
Every day brings a new adventure around here, and I love helping people celebrate. Like this recent day, where we launched a day-long 50th birthday party in Los Altos. Always a pleasure to work with expert event planner, Rick Herns. And thanks for this photo from top videographer, Bob Farnsworth, of Video Madness.
I’ll probably slow down someday, but certainly not yet. Seriously, who would want to taper off going to a party nearly every day?
It’s a busy life. There is always lots more to do besides working. I often daydream about changing the balance — less music and entertaining, more gardening, more reading, more travel, and definitely more time with Bunch, my wife.
But I love entertaining at weddings and parties. Being right there in the midst of things, using our music to create a mood to help everyone enjoy their festivities.
To keep a balance between WORK and LIFE (around here they’re really the same thing, aren’t they?), I daydream about the times I spend alone or with Bunch, my family and friends .
I dwell in the world of ideas. I daydream alot and I read a lot. Blogs, magazines, newspapers, and books. I write at least a half hour every day. Bunch and I have this ongoing conversation — face to face or by telephone — approaching 41 years now.
I had a little time for another daydream or two between the end of last year’s holiday parties and New Year’s Eve. Time for focusing on my family time as well as preparing to resume the band’s schedule in January.
That was a good time to take stock. I periodically assess what I’ve been doing, emphasize what seems promising and de-emphasize what doesn’t. Several times a year, I like to list all my “projects”, as well as my business and personal contacts. Then I keep the best 20% and lose all the rest.
Sounds brutal? No, the top 20% always deserve more of my attention, and for practical purposes the bottom 80% are already lost.
Doesn’t everyone daydream and rebalance like this? Don’t YOU?
