Crisis Management is a skill everyone ought to develop. I can’t imagine anyone, any organization, or any occupation that will be free of emergencies. Can you? In all fields, effective crisis management helps us in a hundred ways, from “saving the bacon” to saving a life.
Thanks to the Institute for Crisis Management for this picture.
I help people plan music for weddings and parties. The more elaborate these celebrations become, the more loose ends needs to be kept tied up, the more opportunities for problems to develop.
Most emergencies can be prevented, but inevitably a few always come up. With experience, we learn how to anticipate most of them and resolve the rest.
Over the years, I’ve learned many handy techniques for crisis management, and in future posts I’ll describe some that I use most often for wedding and party music.
We can apply these techniques to manage a crisis in any field. Let me describe one I used yesterday.
Yesterday about 9pm, I posted this note on Facebook:
“Ohmygosh! My website is down. First time since 1995. What have I done to deserve this? Tonight will be a loooong night!”
About three hours later, I posted this note:
“Yay! My website’s back up and running. Whew! Say what you will, but I called GoDaddy support, and in 3 minutes they diagnosed the problem and fixed it. They said it was simple, but I was baffled. Let’s compare stories. CLICK “Like” if you ever called GoDaddy support.”
Several friends replied online or called with support and/or helpful suggestions. I have limited abilities to manage a website, so one of the earliest suggestions was perfect: “Call the professionals”.
I use this particular tactic all the time with wedding and party music, and it did the trick with my website last night.
How about YOU? Are you skilled at crisis management?
