Robbie Schlosser remembers ET

First Contact is a common term in anthropology and in science fiction stories about the very first meeting of two cultures.

If you remember, First Contact is the title of a 1996  Star Trek movie and the subject of a 1997 movie starring Jodie Foster.  Remember “ET”?

I think about first contact often.  It’s one of many useful perspectives that help me with wedding and party music.

I imagine the very first time people fall in love with a new song.  The pleasure of hearing another piece of music so similar to a familiar favorite.  Or the shock and amazement of the first time hearing a piece of music so exciting and utterly different from anything they’ve ever heard before.

The contrast should be familiar to us.  “Pop” music of every generation relies on generating hundreds of songs just like the few successful ones.  And once in a while a new song comes along that shatters the “familiarity” pattern and forges a new direction.

You can think of a dozen examples examples, I’m sure.

I often aim to create this excitement of first contact at weddings and parties.  When I help people plan the music for their celebration, and later when I’m performing, I’ll include an occasional touch to create the same special “first contact” feeling.

Whatever the occasion, almost always it helps the event come to life and makes the festivities memorable.

How about YOU? Is first contact a useful perspective for YOU, too?
