Magnolia Jazz Band in Belmont, 2008Do social media influence anything?

Practically everything, I’d say!

What subject isn’t affected by what we share on our blogs, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn, Twitter, and all the rest.

I can’t think of any.  The social media influence is everywhere I  look.

How about wedding and party music?

Sure!  Big time.

Maybe you’re involved with a wedding or a party.  Let me describe one social media influence that could help with planning your own wedding or party music.

But first, how do I know this?

Practical experience.

Nearly every day, I help people plan the music for their celebrations, and later my band entertains their guests at the festivities.

For example, in the photo above we’re creating a soft mood at a benefit cocktail party for The Service League of San Mateo. We’re in the sitting room at Ralston Hall, a lovely old mansion in Belmont.  Thanks to my friend Scott Buschman for the photo.

At most special events, the host selects a few songs she wants us to be sure to include.  Maybe the bride and groom’s First Dance.  Or a sentimental favorite at a birthday or anniversary party.  Or the company’s “theme” song.

How does social media influence these selections?  Here’s one way: Searching for them.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and all the rest.  They’re great places for searching practically anything.

I often help people search on social media for the perfect songs according to title, theme, subject, style, era, composer, or recording artist.

So here’s a tip:  Let social media influence planning your wedding or party music:  In addition to the most obvious internet tools (search engines, iTunes), you’ll find that most social media channels are excellent places to search for song ideas.  Post your questions.
