Magnolia Jazz Band in Newark, 2013Easter brunch music presents an interesting challenge for us.

A challenge that we find in every party, every wedding.

That is, what songs will entertain a WIDE group of guests?  The challenge: Pleasing their diversity of tastes.

Every year for many years, we’ve created Easter brunch music at a San Francisco Bay Area hotel or restaurant.  Lots of professional experience for us, and last Sunday was no exception.

Here we are, between tunes at a sensational brunch at the Hilton Newark/Fremont.  My view from the back of the band.  We’re talking briefly about selecting the next few songs — suggesting options, weighing possibilities.

Look at the table nearest the bandstand.  It’s a quick snapshot of the hundreds of people in the ballroom.  Grandmothers, granddaughters, and all the relatives and in-laws in between.  In the room, there were members from maybe a dozen cultural backgrounds.

It was a stretch, and I think we found selections that everyone enjoyed.  Traditional love songs to popular dance tunes.  Some people requested personal favorites and got up to dance when we played theirs.

With the fabulous buffet and all the lively conversations, there was terrific energy throughout the room.  With the atmosphere our Easter brunch music created, everyone enjoyed a wonderful afternoon.  Especially the kids who danced around their tables on a “sugar high” after dessert.

To some degree, we see this same challenge at every party, every wedding.  How to entertain guests of all ages and backgrounds.

Most often the host or hostess will suggest several particular songs for us to play at certain highlights.

But usually all they need to do is describe the mood they want for their celebration.  With our experience, they can rely on us to provide the appropriate music.

To be a successful party host, you don’t have to compile a list of the top 100 best songs of all time.  Of course, you can if you wish.  But it’s better to start with what your guests prefer.

So here’s a tip for planning the music at your wedding or your next party.  Pick a few personal favorite songs, and rely on experienced professional musicians to “read the crowd” and do their magic.

Great post, Robbie, I like your approach of asking for a few suggestions and then going with what the crowd wants. It’s so important to be flexible with your party music as with everything, isn’t that right?

Thanks, Delia. Glad you like this post. I think I trace the idea back to my ancient days as a school teacher. To make a point, I’d have to begin where the students were at (as we used to say). Talk about flexibility: It was minimal lesson plans, jump in, and get the job done. Right you are!

Hotel in Kashmir

If the party will happening if hotel that would far better than anywhere !! If the party will happen in hotel there you will get maximum facilities !!
