Planning music for a wedding or a party?  You’ll find that sharpening your task management skills will help you plan.  Anything.

We all know something about Task Management:  Getting Organized, Prioritizing, Taking Action, and Following Up.

Don’t you just love jargon, too?  Well, we’re all expert at managing something.  Getting dinner on the table.  Getting the kids to their activities on time.  Encouraging teamwork in your group.  Preparing the agenda for a meeting.  The list goes on and on.

And we can apply the management skills we already have whenever we face a new planning challenge.

Still, it sounds daunting, no?

No.  Everyone knows that efficiently and effectively managing your jobs means You’ll get things done!

You can easily find many books, workshops,  and training to teach Task Management techniques, as well as help you develop the right attitudes for using them.  In addition, these days you can find convenient software programs to keep you on track and monitor your progress.

The preceding links are just a few examples.  Whenever you’re interested to learn to manage tasks more effectively (and who isn’t?), search Google (for example, “Time Management”, “Online To Do Lists”, “Task Software” and “Online Planner”) to find more tips and advice.

Listen, the whole point is to convert a big project into a sequence of manageable tasks, and then do them.  At any given moment, be sure you’re completing the MOST IMPORTANT task on your list.

Every so often, consider what you’re currently doing, and just ask yourself, “You got something better to do?”.

You may be a bride-to-be, or a full-time Project Manager, Catering Director, Wedding Coordinator, or Party Planner, or just someone who plans little celebrations from time to time.  Even if your task management skills are PERFECT today, tomorrow will bring new tools and techniques, guaranteed.  So keep your eyes and ears open.

Magnolia Jazz Band in Santa Clara 2011I’ve been managing the Magnolia Jazz Band’s schedule since 1975, and every week it seems I’m learning another new way to do it better.  I expect to improve continually, and I hope to be perfect one of these days.

You too?

By the way, here’s one of my own favorite task management skills.  Long ago I learned that keeping in frequent touch with my colleagues in the hospitality biz helps me manage working with them more smoothly.

Here is a photo of the trio entertaining at the 2011 Awards Gala for the Silicon Valley Concierge Association.  We’re in the center, way in the back.  Thanks to my friends Gus and Carol Holweger for the photo.

So here’s a tip:  Planning wedding music or party music?  Sharpen your Task Management skills.  Look around and ask yourself:  “Do I make the most effective use of my time and resources?
