Robbie Schlosser and friends in Minneapolis, 2012The effect of music at any special event is magical.

If you’re planning a wedding or a party, don’t overlook the magic of your music.

I see it all the time, and a recent experience reminded me again.

What magic?

Simple: Music helps people feel better.

Music guides our mood.  The effect of music can inspire, excite, or soothe us.  Whether we’re rejoicing at a wedding, celebrating at a party, or mourning at a funeral.

As you’ll see in these blog posts, most often my band helps people get happy at weddings and parties.  Occasionally we console people at memorial ceremonies.

We’re very good at providing the right music for every occasion, and our effectiveness depends largely on what music we play and how we play it.

We’ve found that choosing wisely creates the perfect music at every wedding.  Every party.  Though, of course, each event’s details are special and unique.

Let me explain “choosing wisely” with an example.  A sad story, but with a good ending.

Recently my wife and I traveled to Minneapolis to attend her mother’s funeral.  Bernie had been living with us nearly four years, and I’d grown very fond of her.

Bernie was a wonderful person, and her funeral was a very sad occasion for us.  We knew that music could comfort us and all of Bernie’s mourners.

So I brought my cornet.  For an hour preceding Bernie’s funeral Mass, I played familiar hymns as her friends and family gathered.  “Abide With Me”, “Precious Lord”, “Closer Walk With Thee”, and others.  Reassuring songs that everyone would recognize and love.

See the photo above.  I was joined by three of our good friends from the Twin Cities.  Left to right:  Robbie Schlosser, Henry Blackburn, Butch Thompson, and Dave McCurdy.

Our gentle, beautiful music brought peace and calm, filling the room as people chatted softly.

We created a quiet, sentimental mood that comforted everyone there.

It was magic.

So here’s a tip:  Planning music for a wedding, party, or any celebration?  Always give plenty of thought to selecting the best songs for the occasion and presenting them the best way.   You’ll get the magical effect of music.

Robbie I agree that music provides mood and emotion to every event. Am so happy that you were able to provide that comfort at your mother in law’s funeral. What a wonderful tribute to her love and her life.

Thanks, Yvonne.  So nice to hear from you again.  How are YOU taking advantage of the magic in music?

I experience this first had. I\’m a wedding violinist and my services bring a form of expression towards a bride and a groom which they themselves can\’t extent. Music is an addition to our self expression which cannot be expressed within our bodies. This is why I love what I do and people love what I do.

We need art just as much as food and water, I believe. Music transports us into the presence of the ineffable.

You’ve got a great blog here – I enjoyed hearing about the importance of choosing music to fit the celebration. Thank you!

Thanks, Susan.
We’re on the same page here: Art nourishes the soul. If its magic were effable (is that a word?), we could just say or write it, rather than play or dance or paint or sculpt…
