Magnolia Jazz Band in San Francisco 2010Here’s my jazz quartet, this time in standard Dixieland attire.  We were greeting SF Giants fans at a major play-off game back in October 2010.

Recently watching the Giants play in the World Series again was so exciting!

The band was unable to join the fun this time, but I remember all the great afternoons the jazz quartet entertained the fans in previous years.  Recently at AT&T Park and in earlier years at Candlestick Park.

Usually we were stationed outside, by one of the main gates  We add to the excited fans’ already festive mood as they entered the stadium.  Some years we stayed in place, sometimes we’d stroll all around the area.

On two occasions we played inside a large tent for special VIP parties.  For two other years we set up on top of the home dugout and played to the stands, once as a jazz quartet and once as a sextet.

Each time we play for the Giants I rediscover how much our music — played by real musicians — brings to the celebration.  Some folks sing along with us.  Some dance, or add a little spring to their step.  The kids gape at us, and everyone always smiles.

We’re not always a jazz quartet, of course, but it’s the same at every wedding and every party.  The music always energizes the proceedings, whatever they are.  Whatever the occasion calls for, we create the perfect mood with tunes people recognize and enjoy.

Who knows?  Whenever spirits are running high, we just might play “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.

YOUR TURN.   How can you use a jazz quartet in your next party?
